A Michigan Christian couple has removed their ward from school and is suing the school district. They claim school workers were treating their 13-year-old child as a boy without their knowledge or consent. However, she was born a female.
Their names are Dan and Jennifer Mead. They say the Rockford Public School District tried to hide what they were doing from them. The district policy states that school workers can refer to a student by their preferred name and pronouns without notifying their parents, especially if the child has not come out to them.
The Meads claim the policy makes school workers intentionally hide the information from parents. They do this by altering official records to remove references to the new name and pronouns.
They say their child had been seeing a school neuropsychologist at East Rockford Middle School for months. And the counselor kept them in the loop on their sessions. However, in May 2022, their child demanded that teachers refer to them by a new masculine name. The parents say the counselor did not tell the parents about the request.

The lawsuit says that the counselor’s case notes started referring to the child as “trans.’ And the new name started being used in the records. When the child entered eighth grade that fall, the school district had already referred to her by the masculine name.
They stumbled upon the truth by accident. It happened because an employee left some references to the new name and male pronouns on a document they gave them. Jennifer emailed the district to ask if it was a mistake.

However, the worker later admitted that she had changed all other references to the masculine name in the report to the child’s given name. She had only forgotten to change some of them.
After the principal confirmed they would continue using the male pronouns, the couple chose to pull their kid. The Meads believe that God created two sexes, and “each of us is born with a fixed biological sex that is a gift from God, not an arbitrary imposition subject to change.”

The Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian legal advocacy group, irepresentsthe Meads. They filed the lawsuit this month on the family’s behalf, claiming the school district violated their parental rights and religious freedoms.
The lawsuit seeks to have the policy declared illegal. It also demands compensatory damages and attorney’s fees.
