Popstar Britney Spears and her younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, have been involved in a social media spat for a while now, but their apparent feud is deep-rooted in the family.
Right from the time of her conservatorship in 2008, through the Free Britney movement, music star Britney Spears has had a public feud with her sister, Jamie Lynn. This also includes her family as a whole.
Presently Britney and Jamie Lynn are at loggerheads with back-and-forths splayed all over social media. The sisters’ feud stemmed from legal issues about Britney’s conservatorship, and here’s a timeline of how it all happened.
Jamie Lynn Seemed Not To Support The Free Britney Movement
In 2004, Britney Spears’ SJB Revocable Trust was established to protect her financial assets. And in 2018, a court filing made Jamie Lynn responsible for distributing funds from the trust to Britney’s children.
By 2019, the #FreeBritney movement gained a wide following after a released voicemail in the “Britney Gram” podcast alleged that the singer was forced to enroll in a mental facility. It was also in this period that Britney Spears’ documentary was released.
There were, however, contradictory reports from sources who claimed that Britney voluntarily checked into the facility. Jamie also seemed to oppose the narrative the #FreeBritney moment was publicizing.
There were also speculations that Jamie did not support Britney as she fought against the conservatorship. She tweeted that she had been there for the “Toxic” singer long before “anyone else.”
Britney Spears Fights Against the Conservatorship
Amid the grammy-winning singer’s mental health crisis in the 2000s, a Los Angeles court approved a clause of Britney’s dad, Jamie Spears as her legal guardian and overseer of her financial assets.
Thirteen years later, in June 2021, Britney was ready to put an end to the conservatorship. The “Glory” singer had a 24-minute testimony where she talked of an abusive relationship with her dad.
Britney also stated that she would sue her family and share her story with the world. Jamie would later take to social media a few days after the testimony to support her big sister.
Jamie was up on her Instagram story writing of how proud he was of Britney. She wrote, “Since the day I was born, I’ve only loved, adored, and supported my sister, I mean, this is my freaking big sister, before any of this [expletive].”
However, prior to the public show of support, the “Zoey 101″ star had been berated by Britney’s s fans for not speaking up in support of her sister. Jamie addressed the criticisms noting that she did not quickly speak up because she wanted Britney to ‘speak for herself first.”
Jamie Lynn And Britney Spears Shared Cryptic Messages on the Internet
On July 14, 2021, judge Brenda Penny ruled that Britney should be able to choose the brown attorney. This would be a phenomenon that came to pass 13 years after the conservatorship was signed.
Both Jamie Lynn and their mom Lynne Spears took to social media celebrating the feat. Prior to the ruling, Lynne had voiced that Britney deserved to choose her own attorney.
However, the “Framing Britney Spears” star did not seem impressed by their support. She took to Instagram the next day, and in a now-deleted post, Britney wrote:
“The people closest to you who never showed up for you. How dare you make it public that NOW you CARE … did you put your hand out when I was drowning ???? Again … NO.”
Before Spears deleted the post, keen observers noticed that Jamie Lynn was some of the millions of people who liked it. In another social media post, Britney directly called her sister out, noting that she did not like how Jamie Lynn performed remixes of her songs.
Britney Criticized her Family More
On November 12, 2021, Judge Penny approved a petition to dissolve the conservatorship clause over Britney’s assets. The judge had described the conservatorship as “untenable” during the hearing.
From there, Britney took to social media, further opening up and lashing out at her family. She criticized her family, including her mom, for allowing her dad to keep the conservatorship clause for so long.
The former child star also insinuated that her family “should be in jail.” She stated that her family did not allow her to perform new songs or even make remixes of her old songs for thirteen years.
Jamie Lynn’s Book Caused More Drama
Presently Jamie Lynn has released her tell-all memoir, which she hopes will share more light on the ongoing feud between her and Britney. An insider shared that the “Sweet Magnolias” actress “is hoping that people will be open to hearing her story.”
Before its release, Jamie Lynn’s memoir faced some setbacks like backlashes about naming the book after one of Britney’s songs. Her offer to share a portion of the proceeds with a mental health nonprofit was also rejected.
Britney also threw shade at Jamie Lynn’s book on Instagram, and according to an E! News source, the singer was “very, very angry and hurt.” The insider added that Britney felt like Jamie Lynn abandoned her and let her down.
